About Us

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice is a major academic unit within the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs. The department is recognized nationally and internationally as a prominent center of research, scholarship, and teaching on core issues related to crime and justice.

The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Crime Science (BSCS) and Criminal Justice (BSCJ) and graduate degrees in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) and International Crime and Justice (PhD). The bachelor and master degrees are available onsite and online (see https://online.fiu.edu/). According to Niche, our department ranks #8 nationally among public colleges and universities offering a criminal justice program in 2023. FIU's online MSCJ also ranks #10 nationally among public universities according to 2023 U.S. News & World Report.

Joint graduate degrees in collaboration with FIU's College of Law (JD/MSCJ) and with the Department of Public Administration (MSCJ/MPA) are also available. The combined BS/MS degree program is also popular among undergraduate students. This program affords qualified undergraduate students the opportunity to take up to 12 credit hours of approved graduate courses, which can then be counted as dual credit for both the undergraduate and graduate degrees in criminal justice.

Internship opportunities are plentiful for undergraduate and graduate students, as we have internship placements in numerous local, state and federal agencies. The Law Enforcement Advancement Program (LEAP) is also available to students. LEAP combines classroom instruction with specialized police training and workplace experience to produce successful law enforcement professionals and future leaders in the field. LEAP provides students with college credits towards the completion of the BSCJ or BSCS.
